Volunteer to Make a Difference

Did you know that up to 20% of New Zealanders have literacy problems of some degree? Reading signs, instructions for appliances and helping our children learn to read – tasks that we don’t even think about – are simply not a reality for many New Zealanders.

If you have strong reading, writing or basic maths skills, you can make a real difference to the life of just one individual. The most basic skills, is something that you and I might take for granted. Contact us now to volunteer.

We need volunteers to help with:

  • Publicity and promotion
  • Fund-raising

Becoming a volunteer tutor

To become a tutor please contact us and we will send you a tutor application pack.  When you have filled in the tutor application form, we will contact you to let you know when we can offer you our next initial 80 hour training course and to arrange an interview.  When you complete the course we provide follow-up workshops and a tutor support programme. We teach you new ways of doing things and maybe to unlearn old ways. We support you to work with people who have totally different life experiences.

When you undertake training with us, we ask that you make a one year (50 hour) voluntary commitment to partnering with student(s). This includes the 40 hours of practical experience as a tutor which is a requirement of the Certificate of Adult Literacy Tutoring qualification for which our course prepares you.
